Why KDC

To provide fun, outdoor-adventure-opportunities for children in a safe and supportive learning environment.

King Day Camp is dedicated to high quality programs that promote decision making, problem solving, communication and trust. We provide our campers with an opportunity to gain self-confidence, personal achievement and accomplishment. We believe that KDC offers a unique environment where campers can interact with, appreciate and respect all forms of life. King Day Camp fosters personal growth and promotes a sense of community.

Honesty/Trust – Respect/Responsibility – Openness/Communication – Friendship/Community – Inclusion/Diversity – Safety/Challenge & Fun/Creativity!

At King Day Camp we treat others the way that we want to be treated!

KDC is a ‘Challenge by Choice’ adventure-based facility. Challenge by Choice at KDC is a concept in which campers are empowered to decide whether to participate in an activity and/or to what level of engagement/participation. Challenge by Choice recognizes and respects that each participant comes to an activity with varying experience(s) and comfort levels. Your childs’ counsellor and other campers in a group are expected to respect everyone’s right to determine their level of participation in an activity. For example, paddling across the lake may be a positive and appropriate challenge for one camper, where merely getting into a canoe for the first time could be a rewarding experience for another. Adventure based programming should not involve peer pressure. Our staff will offer helpful advice and encouragement that the camper may need in order to step outside of their comfort zone, allowing them to reach their full potential, but not at the expense of their sense of security and safety.

At King Day Camp, we offer a different kind of connection! KDC is an electronics, technology and device free camp! We want our campers to unplug; experience the world around them; engage with nature and each other; and, be wholly present in each moment! Risk is an inherent part of all adventure based programming – it is important that our campers are aware of their surroundings and are fully engaged when our staff are explaining boundaries and items pertaining to their safety and sense of enjoyment.

King Day Camp is a wholly inclusive summer camp that provides a safe space for LGBTQ2S campers and staff. We are an open, welcoming and inclusive space for ALL PERSONS regardless of gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, etc. King Day Camp provides access to non-gender specific change-rooms and washrooms. We do not require parents to provide “gender or gender identity” on our registration forms as we do not use this information to make any decisions with respect to your child while at camp. If, at any time, you feel there is something that we can do at King Day Camp to make anyone feel more welcome, safe or secure – please contact us. We earnestly aim to be and do better in all things for all people.

All KDC staff will participate in a Safe Space Training session during staff camp training week. In addition, for the first time ever, King Day Camp will have no less than two staff trained as Equity and Diversity Ambassadors (E&DA). To be an E&DA, these staff will participate in a training program provided by the Ontario Camps Association.

King Day Camp is a fully accredited member camp with the Ontario Camps Association. Since 1933, the Ontario Camps Association (OCA) has played an important leadership role in promoting and encouraging children and youth camping in Ontario. The OCA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that draws its membership from camps, individuals and like- minded organizations and agencies, all devoted to maintaining high standards for organized camping, and to sharing information and ideas that maintain these standards.
